'This dormouse painting was created as a small experimental piece to test a new surface medium, Ampersand pastel board.

This turned out to be an exceedingly frustrating experience. I found the board’s hard textured surface did not hold the pastels well if at all and so I switched to coloured pencil with very unsatisfactory results. Eventually, I turned to inks, water colour and gouache to complete the picture. The textured surface was not ideal, nevertheless, a passable finish was achievable. There are positives for this surface, it can be scratched away with a fine knife for fine detail and highlights, also when gold leaf is applied the gilded surface takes on a unique crystalline shine. However, from my own experience the negatives by far out way the positives and I will not be using this type of board again.’ - STRIX
